In late October 2024, Valencia was devastated by a catastrophic weather event known as a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos), or isolated depression at high levels. This meteorological phenomenon occurs when cold and warm air masses converge, leading to the formation of powerful rain clouds.
Beginning on October 29, the DANA brought unprecedented rainfall to the region. Some areas received over 300 millimeters within a few hours, with certain locations experiencing nearly an entire year's worth of rainfall in just eight hours, with the tragical result in at least 216 fatalities and leaving at least 16 people missing.
In the aftermath, the regional government's response faced significant criticism. Many residents received flood warnings too late, and there were mixed messages and poor coordination among authorities. This led to public protests, with nearly 130,000 people demanding the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón due to the perceived mishandling of the disaster.
